Description

Pizza Beef & Mozzarella Puff Pastry Twists fuse seasoned ground beef and tangy marinara with flaky golden pastry and melted mozzarella for the ultimate comfort food appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Ingredients for the Beef & Pizza Filling:
  • ½ lb (225 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup marinara sauce or pizza sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Ingredients for the Pastry & Coating:
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 large egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp garlic powder + 1 tsp dried parsley (for garlic glaze)

Instructions

  1. Instructions:
  2. Prep Oven & Sheet: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Cook Seasoned Beef: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef, break into fine crumbles, and cook for 5–6 minutes until fully browned. Drain grease, then stir in marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper. Simmer for 2 minutes until thick. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  4. Layer the Pastry: Unroll 1 sheet of puff pastry onto a parchment-lined cutting board. Spread the beef mixture evenly across the pastry, leaving a ¼-inch border. Top generously with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan. Place the second sheet of puff pastry directly on top and press the edges gently to seal.
  5. Cut & Twist: Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the pastry rectangle crosswise into 10–12 equal strips. Carefully lift each strip, hold both ends, and twist in opposite directions 3–4 times to form spirals. Arrange twists on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart.
  6. Brush & Bake: Brush the twists lightly with egg wash. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 18–20 minutes until puff pastry is puffed, golden brown, and the cheese is bubbly.
  7. Glaze & Serve: Whisk melted butter, garlic powder, and dried parsley together. Brush the warm garlic butter generously over the freshly baked twists. Serve warm with extra marinara sauce for dipping!

Notes

  • Keep the pastry cold until the last moment; warm puff pastry becomes difficult to twist and loses its ability to rise tall.
  • Do not overfill the pastry; too much sauce creates steam that makes the bottom soggy.
  • Seal the edges firmly but gently to prevent filling from escaping while maintaining layers.
  • Avoid twisting too tightly, which can squeeze out the filling and break the delicate pastry strips.
  • Let the beef cool completely before assembly; hot filling will melt the pastry layers before baking.
