Description

A hearty and comforting Stuffed Cabbage Roll Casserole with layers of tender cabbage, savory beef, rice, and a rich tomato sauce. All the classic flavors of cabbage rolls in an easy, no-roll bake.


Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, parboil chopped cabbage in salted water for 5 minutes, then drain well.
  6. Layer half of the cabbage in the baking dish, followed by half the beef mixture and a layer of rice. Repeat with remaining layers, ending with sauce on top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 minutes more until bubbly.
  8. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Notes

  • Use lean beef to avoid excess grease.
  • Let the casserole rest before serving so layers hold together.
  • For a cheesy twist, add shredded mozzarella before baking.
