Description

Crispy golden fritters filled with molten smoked Gouda, served with a tangy-sweet balsamic honey mustard dipping sauce. Perfect as an appetizer, party snack, or indulgent bite-size treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups shredded Smoked Gouda
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or panko)
  • Vegetable oil, enough for deep frying
  • 1/2 cup Dijon mustard (for sauce)
  • 3 tablespoons honey (for sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (for sauce)
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil (for sauce)
  • Pinch of salt (for sauce)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil and prepare: Pour vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet to a depth suitable for deep frying and heat to 350°F (175°C). Line a plate with paper towels for draining.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper until evenly combined.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In the dry mixture, stir in eggs and milk until smooth and slightly thickened.
  4. Add cheese and herbs: Fold in the shredded smoked Gouda and chopped parsley until the mixture holds together but remains slightly loose.
  5. Shape and coat: Place breadcrumbs in a shallow dish. Use a cookie scoop or spoon to portion the batter, form into balls, then roll each ball in breadcrumbs until fully coated.
  6. Fry in batches: Fry the coated fritters in small batches for 3 to 4 minutes, turning as needed, until they are deep golden brown and crispy on the outside with melted cheese inside.
  7. Drain and finish: Remove fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on the prepared paper towels. Sprinkle a little extra finishing salt while still hot if desired.
  8. Make the dipping sauce: Whisk together Dijon mustard, honey, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl until smooth and glossy.
  9. Serve warm: Arrange fritters on a platter with the balsamic honey mustard sauce in a small bowl for dipping and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Chill the mixture briefly before shaping to help fritters hold their shape during frying.
  • Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature and ensure a crisp exterior.
  • For extra crunch, double-coat in breadcrumbs.
  • Reheat leftovers in an oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
