  • Method: Grilled (skillet)
  • Cuisine: American Fusion
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A warm, chewy bagel sandwich layered with sharp cheddar, thinly sliced pear and apple, and sweet, jammy caramelized onions, grilled until the cheese is gooey and the bagel is golden.

Ingredients

  • Bagels: 2 plain or whole wheat bagels, sliced in half
  • Cheddar Cheese: 4 slices sharp cheddar
  • Pear: 1 ripe pear, thinly sliced
  • Apple: 1 crisp apple (such as Honeycrisp), thinly sliced
  • Yellow Onion: 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Butter: 2 tablespoons
  • Olive Oil: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt: Pinch
  • Black Pepper: Pinch

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil to the skillet, then add the sliced onion. Cook slowly for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized. Season with a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Wipe out the skillet lightly and return it to medium-low heat. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter and let it melt to coat the pan.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Butter the cut sides of each bagel half. On the bottom half, layer one slice of cheddar, a layer of thin pear slices, a layer of thin apple slices, a generous spoonful of caramelized onions, then another slice or two of cheddar. Top with the other bagel half, buttered side out.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet. Cook gently for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bagel is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  6. Finishing Touches: Remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it rest for 1 minute so the fillings set and do not spill out when cut.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Cut the sandwich in half and serve hot, while the cheese is gooey and the bagel is crisp.

Notes

  • Squeeze excess moisture from juicy fruit slices with a paper towel to avoid soggy sandwiches.
  • Caramelize onions ahead of time and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days for quick assembly.
  • Cover the pan briefly while cooking to help the cheese melt evenly without increasing heat too much.
