Description

Soft, buttery, and lightly sweet, Old Fashioned Tea Cakes are a nostalgic Southern classic that pair perfectly with tea or coffee.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt, then gradually add to the wet mixture.
  4. Lightly flour a surface, roll the dough to ¼ inch thickness, and cut into rounds with a cookie cutter.
  5. Place the cut dough onto the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until the edges are just turning golden.
  7. Cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack, then serve and enjoy.

Notes

  • Chill dough for 30 minutes before baking for cleaner shapes.
  • Do not overbake, as they should stay soft in the center.
  • Sprinkle sugar on top before baking for added sparkle and crunch.
