Description

Louisa’s Spaghetti Sauce is a slow-simmered, tomato-rich classic passed down through generations. Made with simple pantry staples, it delivers deep flavor, comforting aroma, and a homemade touch perfect for pasta nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cans (28 oz each) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Place your large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add the olive oil, then sauté the chopped onion for about 5 minutes until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes to deepen the flavor.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and sugar. Stir everything together.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for at least 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Finishing Touches: Stir in the fresh basil leaves just before removing from heat.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Ladle the sauce generously over your favorite pasta or use it however you love.

Notes

  • Use high-quality canned tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Add a splash of pasta water if the sauce becomes too thick.
  • Finish with fresh basil for a bright herbal touch.
  • Double the batch and freeze for future meals.
