- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 4 brioche or potato buns
- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 iceberg lettuce leaves
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until very hot.
- In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, sugar, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Chill sauce in the fridge.
- Lightly butter buns and toast them in the skillet until golden. Set aside.
- Form beef into 4 balls, flatten into thin patties, and season with salt and pepper.
- Cook patties in the hot skillet, smash down with a spatula, and sear for 2 minutes per side. Add cheese on top during the last minute.
- Spread sauce on each bun, layer lettuce, tomato, onion, patty, and top with the other bun half.
- Serve warm, wrapped in parchment or plated.
Notes
- Chill the sauce at least 20 minutes for best flavor and texture.
- Toast buns for added richness and to prevent sogginess.
- Use freshly ground beef for juicier patties.
