Description

Soft, spiced buns studded with dried fruit and topped with a signature cross, Hot Cross Buns are a traditional Easter treat with irresistible flavor and comforting texture.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Instant Yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups Warm Milk
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Mixed Dried Fruit
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour (for crosses)
  • 1/3 cup Water (for crosses)
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar + 2 tablespoons Water (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit until foamy.
  3. Add butter, egg, spices, salt, and flour. Mix to form dough.
  4. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth. Mix in dried fruit.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
  6. Divide into 12 balls, arrange on a tray, and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. Mix flour and water to make paste, pipe crosses on buns.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  9. While hot, brush with sugar glaze.
  10. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Soak dried fruit in warm juice for extra plumpness.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze for up to 1 month and reheat before serving.
