Soft, spiced buns studded with dried fruit and topped with a signature cross, Hot Cross Buns are a traditional Easter treat with irresistible flavor and comforting texture.

- 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons Instant Yeast
- 1 1/4 cups Warm Milk
- 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter
- 1 Large Egg
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup Mixed Dried Fruit
- 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour (for crosses)
- 1/3 cup Water (for crosses)
- 2 tablespoons Sugar + 2 tablespoons Water (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit until foamy.
- Add butter, egg, spices, salt, and flour. Mix to form dough.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth. Mix in dried fruit.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
- Divide into 12 balls, arrange on a tray, and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Mix flour and water to make paste, pipe crosses on buns.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
- While hot, brush with sugar glaze.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- Soak dried fruit in warm juice for extra plumpness.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Freeze for up to 1 month and reheat before serving.
