Description

Flaky puff pastry filled with tender, cinnamon-spiced apple slices and drizzled with sticky caramel, baked until golden for an easy, crowd-pleasing dessert.

Ingredients

  • Puff pastry sheets, 2 sheets thawed
  • Apples, 3 medium, peeled and thinly sliced
  • Brown sugar, 1/3 cup
  • Granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons
  • Cinnamon, 1 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter, 2 tablespoons melted
  • Caramel sauce, 1/2 cup plus extra for drizzling
  • Egg, 1 large beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter until evenly coated.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Lay the thawed puff pastry sheets flat on the prepared baking sheet and cut each sheet into 3 equal squares or rectangles to yield 6 pieces total.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Place a mound of the apple mixture in the center of each pastry piece, drizzle about 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce over the apples, then fold or crimp the pastry edges slightly to contain the filling.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Brush the pastry edges with the beaten egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes, until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown.
  6. Finishing Touches: Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Drizzle additional caramel sauce over each pastry and, if desired, sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt or chopped nuts.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm, optionally with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy immediately for best texture.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold until just before assembling to maximize flakiness.
  • Slice apples thinly so they soften quickly and evenly in the oven.
  • Do not overfill the pastry squares to avoid sogginess and leaking.
  • Reheat leftovers in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 8 to 10 minutes to restore crispness.
