Description
Juicy hamburger steaks smothered in rich, homemade brown gravy with caramelized onions. This comforting Southern classic is full of flavor and perfect for any cozy dinner night.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup caramelized onions (optional)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 equal patties.
- Heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add patties and cook for about 4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter, then whisk in flour to make a roux. Gradually add beef broth while whisking until smooth.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce and let the gravy simmer until it thickens.
- Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes on low heat.
- Top with caramelized onions if desired and serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice.
Notes
- Do not overmix the beef to keep the patties tender.
- For extra flavor, use beef broth instead of water in the gravy.
- Let the patties simmer in the gravy to absorb flavor before serving.
