Description

A warm and comforting broccoli au gratin made with tender broccoli florets coated in a creamy cheese sauce and topped with a golden, crispy breadcrumb crust.


Ingredients

  • 5 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Blanch broccoli for 2 to 3 minutes until bright green, then drain and place in the baking dish.
  3. Melt butter in a skillet, whisk in flour, and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly pour in milk while whisking until thickened.
  5. Stir in cheddar, Parmesan, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli.
  7. Mix breadcrumbs with olive oil and sprinkle on top.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated cheese for the smoothest sauce.
  • Add a pinch of paprika for color and warmth.
  • Prepare ahead by assembling without breadcrumbs and adding them just before baking.
